VISAKHAPATNAM: Rich tributes were paid to General Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton at a function held in the city on Saturday to celebrate his 205th birth anniversary. The Department of Civil Engineering of the Andhra University College of Engineering organised the programme in association with the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India), the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI), the APLC, and the Visakhapatnam chapter of the Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers. AU Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopala Reddy recalling the services of Sir Cotton said but for his services the Godavari, which is now catering to the irrigation needs of two or three harvests a year, would have gone waste into the sea. Prof. Reddy stressed the urgent need for interlinking of the rivers in the country to solve irrigation and drinking water problems in several States. Had the interlinking of the rivers project, which is a big task, been carried out in 60s or 70s, India would have been something else today, the VC said. ICI organising secretary S. Gopala Sastry recalled the services of Sir Cotton who lived in Visakhapatnam and was instrumental in constructing the Dowleswaram dam across the Godavari. Former General Manager of Indian Railways B.V. Rama Rao described Sir Cotton as a pioneer in creating infrastructure. AU Civil Engineering Hof D P.S.N. Raju, former Principal of AU Engineering College T. Sivaji Rao and retired Chief Engineer S. Satyanarayana paid encomiums to the late British Engineer.
