TIRUNELVELI: Though the State Government’s decision to begin work on the Information Technology Park at Gangaikondan on June 17 is received with jubilation among people, they want Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to come out with a concrete announcement on the Nanguneri Special Economic Zone, gathering dust since February 11, 2001. The then Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government decided to establish a SEZ at Nanguneri as a hi-tech industrial park. Subsequently, 2,500 acres of barren land near Rajakkalmangalam and Vaagaikulam was acquired for the project. An US-based promoter was roped in to establish the park, but the change of guard at Fort St. George in 2001 put the project in cold storage. When the DMK returned to power in 2006, the Government earmarked Rs. 700 crore for creating infrastructure facilities. Frequent visits of top officials, accompanied by the promoter (INFAC Management Corporation) and prospective investors and announcements that work on the SEZ would commence soon raised the hopes of the people but nothing positive has happened so far. “Mere announcements from the Government are not enough. The Chief Minister, who visits Tirunelveli on Sunday, should come out with a positive announcement at least this time so that the indefinite wait for the SEZ will come to an end. We hope that the present Government, which is fulfilling its poll promises in phased manner, will also accomplish the Nanguneri SEZ,” said D.S.M. Jayarajan, president of the Tirunelveli District Small and Tiny Industries Association.
