Loose soil under tracks hits train services near Tambaram

Restoration work under way; traffic to be restored by Sunday

Disruption: Work to restore traffic, near Tambaram on Saturday.
TAMBARAM: Train traffic on one of the main line broad guage tracks near Tambaram railway station was suspended owing to mud sliding below the track at the construction site of a road-over-bridge that will replace the level-crossing there.
Around 3 a.m. on Friday, gatemen at the level-crossing and a gangman on duty noticed mud sliding beneath the track. There was heavy rain between 1 a.m. and 2.30 a.m. and this resulted in mud and ballast supporting the tracks to slide and sink into the ground. Pillars are being erected here to support the bridge.
The employees immediately alerted the staff on duty at the Tambaram station. A goods train approaching the station was diverted along the parallel track (“down line”). Southern Railway officials acknowledged that the alert employees averted a major incident.
The sliding of the loose earth was arrested only after sand bags were placed at the spot. Restoration work was under way and traffic on this track was likely to be restored by Sunday evening, the officials said.
