Central Mall booked for violating rules

Staff Reporter

Customer pays Re. 1 less but a hundred more for mosquito repellent

Bad times: Controller of Legal Metrology Tejdeep Kaur Menon conducting a raid on Hyderabad Central premises on Saturday.

HYDERABAD: He was indeed cheated when he paid Rs. 115 for a mosquito repellent stick which actually costs Rs. 14. But the customer had the last laugh after legal metrology officials forced the management of the Hyderabad Central to pay him a compensation of Rs. 500 as penalty.

The customer, Rakesh Varma, an employee of a software company, bought the repellent on May 5 but had noticed only on Saturday that it cost him more. He returned to the mall along with the bill, even as the metrology team led by its Controller Tejdeep Kaur Menon was inspecting the mall.

Goods seized

Noticing the officials, Mr. Varma informed the matter to them and when they checked up, it was found that the mall had pasted a price tag of Rs. 115 over the MRP printed on the box. “They had given me a discount of Rs. 1 for the repellent,” Mr. Varma told The Hindu.

The officials maintained that they could levy a compounding fee of Rs. 1 lakh against the management for charging excess price on commodities. The officials also seized goods worth Rs.50 lakh and registered over 100 cases against the management for violating various provisions of the Packaged Commodities Rules, 1976. It is mandatory for the companies to print consumer helpline numbers and manufacturing address on the products as per the new notification effective from May 1, 2007.

Most of the products, including garments, novelties, groceries, etc. being sold at Hyderabad Central Mall lacked consumer helpline numbers, dates of manufacture, maximum retail prices and other declarations, said Controller of Legal Metrology Ms. Menon said.

“Cases were registered on the companies importing, manufacturing products without date of manufacturing etc and against Hyderabad Central management for selling such products,” Mrs. Menon said.
