VISAKHAPATNAM: The King George Hospital authorities on Saturday requested Minister for Medical Education and Health Insurance Galla Aruna Kumari to sanction Rs. 18 crores for the required equipment in the super specialities block that was coming up on the hospital premises. Minister for Commercial Taxes Konathala Ramakrishna, KGH Superintendent T. Raviraju and Visakha-I MLA Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao explained to the Minister the needs of the KGH during the latter’s visit to the hospital. The Minister visited the site where the Rs. 10-crore super specialities block was coming up and the Department of Cardiology. She was also briefed about the new facilities like 24-hour laboratory and trauma care unit being provided in the hospital. Review meet
Earlier, during a review meeting, Dr. Raviraju said the KGH needed CT and MRI scans. A sum of Rs. 25 lakhs was needed to conduct neuro surgeries under the Arogya Sri programme. The KGH had performed 45 heart surgeries so far under the Arogya Sri and received Rs. 4.5 lakhs from insurance companies. Mr. Ramakrishna, while answering a question, said the cardiology department would be able to conduct open heart surgeries if another unit was sanctioned. He also wanted the KGH to mobilise at least Rs. 10 crores from the local public sector undertakings. The Health Minister said a proposal was being made to acquire equipment worth Rs. 18 crores for the KGH and Rs. 15.2 crores had been sanctioned to take up works in the hospital and Andhra Medical College. Andhra Medical College principal C.V. Rao said the Government Dental College would start functioning from the next academic year. The college needed Rs. 3.5 crores to construct an indoor sports stadium. An old student of the college had promised to provide Rs. 1 crore, said Dr. Rao and wanted the Government to bear the rest.
