This Day That Age
The World Council of Peace has appealed to all Governments of the world "in the name of all that is sacred to man to act in favour of the immediate ending of nuclear tests." The appeal, adopted at the conclusion of the seven-day session of the Council in Colombo on June 17, said that, despite powerful expression of world opinion, explosions continued to pollute the air, land and water and menace the future of all mankind. "They are the culminating expression of the arms race now in progress and can only eventually end in the final horror of an atomic war. The Governments concerned must immediately declare a truce to all test explosions and accelerate negotiations to reach an agreement on the prohibition of all such tests. Proposals for the limitation or registration of tests offer no solution to the problem as they would not lead to the ending of the tests. By contrast, an agreement to stop test explosions will create confidence, improve the international situation by reducing tension, and thus open the way both for a complete banning of these inhuman weapons of mass destruction and for general disarmament."
