PDS rice seized

ERODE: Dharapuram revenue officials seized 167 bags of smuggled rice meant for supply under the Public Distribution System from a lorry on Vellakoil-Puduppai main road on Saturday. The officials, under the instructions of Revenue Divisional Officer Karpagam, were conducting a vehicle check on the road.

When they tried to intercept a lorry, the driver sped past them and abandoned the vehicle five km away from the place.

The officials who chased the lorry in their jeep recovered 167 bags of PDS rice and seized the lorry.

The rice, which was meant for supply to family cardholders, were being smuggled to Kerala, the police said. – Staff Reporter
