Land disbursal will be monthly affair: Karunanidhi

THRUST TO DEVELOPMENT: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi inaugurating development works at a function held at Palayamkottai on Sunday to mark the launch of 4th phase of 2-acre land distribution.—

TIRUNELVELI: Reiterating that the foremost objective of his government is only to protect and empower the disadvantaged, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has announced that the disbursal of 2 acres of land to landless small and marginal farmers and farmhands will be conducted every month.

The Chief Minister was here on Sunday to launch the fourth phase of 2-acre land distribution, lay foundation stone for new projects worth Rs. 427.08 crore, including the Rs. 300-crore Information Technology Park at Gangaikondan SIPCOT Industrial Estate, inaugurate 1,141 development works worth Rs. 33.18 crore and disburse welfare assistance to the tune of Rs. 9.81 crore to 37,461 beneficiaries. Addressing a function held on Tirunelveli Medical College Ground in Palayamkottai, Mr. Karunanidhi said his government had so far disbursed 1,01,623 acres of land to 91,576 poor beneficiaries, including 24,774 Scheduled Caste members, 2,089 Scheduled Tribe members, 28,880 Backward Community members, 32,048 Most Backward Community members and 3,785 other community farmers.

“This (disbursal of land) will continue every month and during the birth anniversaries of great leaders such as K. Kamaraj, Periyar and C.N. Annadurai even if our adversaries criticise it,” Mr. Karunanidhi said.

Agreeing to an appeal from the Mayor of Tirunelveli Corporation, A.L. Subramanian, the Chief Minister announced that a flyover at the Chellapandian Traffic Island would be constructed in the name of the former Speaker on an outlay of Rs. 18 crore to ease traffic congestion on the arterial Thiruvananthapuram High Road–Bypass Road junction.

Mr. Karunanidhi disbursed 102.06 acres of government poromboke land to 81 farmers, 102.10 acres of government land under encroachment to 85 persons and 1,393.46 acres of developed private land to 678 beneficiaries from Tirunelveli district. A total of 4,221 beneficiaries from the district so far received 6,378.45 acres of land after the scheme was introduced a year ago.

Though speakers at the function appealed to the Chief Minister to commence work on the Nanguneri Special Economic Zone immediately, he remained silent, suggesting that it would take more time.

Speaker R. Avudaiyappan presided over the function. Union Minister of State for Home V. Radhika Selvi, Ministers Poongothai Aladi Aruna and T.P.M. Maideen Khan, Tenkasi MP M. Appadurai, MLAs V. Karuppasamy Pandian and S. Peter Alphonse and Tirunelveli Mayor A.L. Subramanian spoke.

Ministers, Arcot N. Veerasamy, S. Durai Murugan, K. Ponmudi, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, N. Suresh Rajan, MLAs M. Appavu, H. Vasanthakumar, P. Veldurai and N. Maalairaja, and chairman of district panchayat, M. Graham Bell participated.

District Collector G. Prakash and District Revenue Officer G. Srinivasan spoke.
