It’s a mere rumour, says Dharam Singh

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The former Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh on Sunday dismissed reports appearing in a section of the press that he was being appointed Governor of Goa or Andhra Pradesh as “mere rumours.”

Mr. Singh, who returned from New Delhi after meeting AICC president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister A.K. Antony, AICC general secretary Ahmed Patel and others, told presspersons that the central party leadership had not sounded him about the proposal so far.

To another question, Mr. Singh remarked, “I am with you and will continue to be with you” and “if there is any proposal in this regard from the central leadership I will consider it”.

Asked whether the party leadership held consultation before appointing anybody as Governor, Mr Singh quipped, “Yes, the party leadership discusses such issues with the concerned”.

Asked about the speculation of changes in the party leadership in the State, Mr. Singh said that there was no proposal before the central leadership to effect such changes.

Suicides

Expressing concern over the continued spate of suicides by debt-ridden farmers in the State, Mr. Singh said that after the coalition Government came to power more than 213 farmers had committed suicide and the Government, except for making promises and giving assurances, had done nothing to stop it.

Mr. Singh said that the Government was not serious about solving the problems of the farmers and even in the meeting convened by the Chief Minister a couple of days back with farmers, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa was absent.
