KOCHI: A seminar on ‘Care for the Urological Problems of the Elderly’ was held here on Sunday. District Panchayat President P.S. Shyla inaugurated the seminar, which was addressed by experts in the field. Kochi Urology Club president Dr. George P. Abraham and urology consultant at Amrita Institute of Medical Research Dr. Sanjay Bhat spoke on the occasion. Experts said the elderly were the most disturbed by urological disorders. Urinary tract infection, urinary incontinence (involuntary passing of urine while coughing, sneezing etc.) is some of the problems seen in the elderly. However, if a patient was bed-ridden a catheter and urine bag is needed. Such patients need to go to the hospital regularly for hygienic maintenance. To cater to the needs of such patients, a private institution in the city has launched a ‘home care’ for bed-ridden urology patients. A mobile unit will visit homes of those who need hospital care for urinary bladder purification, changing of urinary tube and other such needs. The unit will also address problems of bed sores.
