MADURAI: The Thiagarajar College here has been reaccredited with ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for a period of five years from this academic year after assessment of various criteria. This institution, which was earlier accredited with five stars, got the re-accreditation last month, R. Raja Govindasamy, Principal in-charge, said on Saturday. Talking to reporters at a press meet held to mark the 114th birth anniversary of the college founder, Karumuttu Thiagaraja Chettiar, he said that the re-accreditation process included assessment of curricular aspects, teaching and learning methods, evaluation, research, consultancy and extension, student support and progression, among other things. The ‘A’ Grade status was valid for five years from 2007 to 2012, the Principal said. Prof. Raja Govindasamy said that the college had received Rs.27 lakh as grant from theUGC to start a multi-disciplinary postgraduate innovative course in Bio-resources Management from this academic year. Also, another Rs.14 lakh had come from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research to conduct research on ‘ecological studies and mathematical modelling on biological invasions in Gulf of Mannar.’ The Principal said J. Deepan Chakkravarthy, a B.Com student was one of the chess Grand Masters playing international tournaments while R. Divya, a B.Sc student, was selected for Youth Exchange Programme of the NCC to Singapore as a naval cadet.
