News Analysis
>>In a report "12 firms to get Raksha Udyog status" (June 18, 2007), a reader said that "ordinance factories", mentioned in the text, should have been ordnance factories". Ordnance (late Middle English) is a variant of ordinance. >>A report "Concern over incidence of elder abuse" (Chennai city, June 16, 2007, page 1) had made a reference to World Elder Abuse Day. It should have been World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), which is a standing committee of the International Association of Gerontology (IAG), has designated June 15 as "World Elder Abuse Awareness Day", with the support of organisations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organisation, the International Association of Gerontology (IAG), the International Federation of Aging (IFA), the Subcommittee on Elder Abuse of the UN NGO Committee on Ageing and the International Longevity Center (ILC - USA). The objective is to stress the need for people to understand what elder abuse is and how it can be prevented. >>In a report "He drove Rajnikant to stardom" (June 16, 2007), on how Raja Bahadur played an instrumental role in encouraging his friend and actor Rajnikant to take to acting, a sentence was: "The young actor was hired by director K. Balachander and the rest is hysteria." A number of readers said that it should have been "_ the rest is history". The writer clarifies that it was deliberate; it is "hysteria". >>A report "DPA to hold all-women rally on July 1" (Chennai city, June 16, 2007) had misspelt, in two instances, the name of Rajasthan Governor and UPA Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil as Pratibha Patel. >>The heading of a report "Course in tool and dye making" (Kerala, June 13, 2007, page 5) was "Course in tool and dye making" It should have been "_ die making". The report was on tooling and machining. >>In the scoreboard accompanying a cricket report "[Shivnarine] Chanderpaul scores yet another century" ("Sport", June 18, 2007), Collymore's bowling analysis was incorrectly given as 10-2-35- 0. It should have been 10-2-35-1. Also, England finished the day at 121 for four in 34 overs, and not 120 for four as was stated. >>Corrections in a report "His search ends but kindles hopes of others" (June 13, 2007), on a group which was in Pakistan recently to look for their relatives/Indian servicemen missing in action since the 1971 war with Pakistan. Captain Giriraj Singh belonged to 5 Assam regiment, and not 5 Assam Rifles, which is a paramilitary force. The name of the Pakistani Major who provided information about Captain Giriraj Singh has been wrongly reported as Major Tanveer Shehzad. It is Major Tanveer Syed.
