Tiruchi: In association with the France-based INRA ( Institut National de la Recherche) and UN-AMI, the Bharathidasan University will organise a three-day international conference on the ‘role of technology and innovation in the attainment of the millennium development goals - food security, socio-economic security, environmental security and health, - in marginalized zones in India’ on July 12, 13 and 14. The conference will bring together academics, NGOs, policy makers, firms and funding agencies to discuss strategies in a spirit of cooperation and come up with a set of ideas to pursue the strategies further. Speakers will cover the economic-technico context of food & environmental security, and health and empowerment, and discuss the agenda for a research-action program designed to achieve specific targets of health, food and environment security in marginalized zones in India. Food, health, education, environment and energy are the main sectors that would be considered with gender perspective at the seminar against the backdrop of the Indian Government’s assertion that the attainment of millennium development goals by 2015 that the UN had agreed upon in 1990 to ensure a more equitable and sustainable development of the planet is a national priority, according to the coordinators of the seminar Shyama V. Ramani of INRA, France, and N. Manimekalai, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, Bharathidasan University. In India, clear strategies have not been devised yet in terms of investment allocation, due to insufficient data and understanding of the processes underlying the evolution of the sectors associated with the MDG. In particular, interlinks between the different millennium goals such as environmental management, livelihood provision, gender equality and security for children have not been much studied. While science and technology revolutionise the lives of people of 21st century and open up tremendous career opportunities to women, opportunities are restricted for those who fall behind in the technology divide. Technology gender gap is emerging, changing the power and career growth of women. To set right the divide, the conference will explore technological solutions, organizational routines, social norms and public policy to attain the MDG while facilitating exchange between academics, NGOs, firms, funding agencies and policy makers. More details about this event are available with Ms. Manimekalai at the dial of 0431-2407028.
