CHENNAI: A new political front consisting of major regional parties in the country was floated on Monday. The new front, christened United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA), will function as a viable alternative to the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Expressing confidence that more regional parties would join the new alliance, Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu said there was a possibility of a political realignment at the national level before the next Lok Sabha elections. He said the UNPA was formed not only for political consideration but also for nation building. Leaders of the seven-party alliance vowed to make the country a global super power. Criticising the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre for its failure on all fronts, Mr. Naidu said the 10 per cent growth rate claimed by the Central Government had not benefited the poor and middle class people. The benefits of economic reforms had not reached the common man. The new alliance would play a major role at the national level and propose alternative economic reforms, which would bring real benefits to all sections of society. When newspersons asked what impact the regional parties could have on national politics, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalaithaa replied that in the current political scenario, the nation’s destiny was being decided by regional parties alone. Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Choutala said the leaders would meet again in Delhi after the Presidential election and chalk out the alliance’s future strategy.
