Police to handle offences
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: The Department of Law and Parliamentary Affairs has suggested that the State Government promulgate an ordinance to amend the Karnataka Excise (Amendment) Act, banning manufacture, transportation and sale of arrack. “A mere amendment to the rules could be challenged in court,” said an official of the Excise Department.
All excise offences, other than those committed by persons holding licences given by the department, will now be handled by the police. A 13-member special squad comprising persons from both the departments will be set up in all taluks. For this, Rs. 60 crore would be set aside. During 2006-07 up to May 31, the Government got a revenue of Rs. 2,041 crore from arrack sales. Of this, Rs. 2,008 crore came from rentals and Rs. 33 crore from excise duty. It expected a revenue of Rs. 167 crore and Rs. 3 crore duty during June totalling Rs.2,211 crore.
