IT Corridor building freeze withdrawn

SET FOR EXPANSION: The turnaround comes within weeks following the decision to regulate large buildings on the corridor.

Chennai: The Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) is now issuing permission for large-scale development in the IT Corridor. The earlier decision to freeze development stands withdrawn till a comprehensive plan is evolved.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) was directed to assist the DTCP and draw up an overall plan for 44 villages on the IT Corridor.

This plan was to recommend regulations for large-scale development. Even before this plan could be readied, permission for buildings is being granted.

The reason put out is that the recent government order imposing an “impact fee” is good enough to regulate development.

However, this might not be entirely correct. The government order on impact charges does not include the proposed increase in development charges.

A new order on revised development charges is yet to be issued. Experts are of the opinion that the move is a hasty one and that the Government could have waited for the CMDA plan to come out.

The Government of Tamil Nadu earlier felt that laws to regulate the development in villages outside the Chennai Metropolitan Area were not adequate and wanted to stop building construction in the IT Corridor temporarily.

All projects that were to come outside the metropolitan area, that is, after Siruseri village, had been denied permission.
