More land recovered in district

Staff Reporter

Bouts of heavy rain slacken progress of the survey

Major encroachment on Pareekanni River
17 notices issued in Kanayannur taluk

KOCHI: The revenue officials in Kothamangalam taluk recovered more than 47 cents on Monday as part of the anti-encroachment drive.

The recovery was made in three separate cases, including two encroachments over the road poramboke, which were relatively small scale, and a major encroachment on the Pareekanni River in Kuttamangalam village, a senior taluk officia l said.

Meanwhile, a hotelier who had re-encroached upon 10 cents on the Kuroor creek within the Kothamangalam town limits after being evicted once, had, reportedly, approached the revenue authorities expressing the willingness to move out voluntarily. Revenue officials had filed a police complaint on the issue for criminal trespassing into government land and this had prodded the hotelier to rethink, it is learnt. Survey work progressed in the taluk on Monday.

In Aluva taluk, seven notices were served on encroachments in Thottakkattukara. The survey progressing in the Angamali town region had revealed reclamation of a paddy field by an individual, which was found to be the cause for water-logging in the ground floor of a major building in Angamali junction.

As the discussions with the individual for corrective measures failed, the revenue authorities, with the permission of District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, forcibly took measures by laying an underground pipe through the reclaimed land for the smooth flow of water into municipality drainage thus resolving the problem of water-logging, an official said.

No fresh notices were served in Angamali on Monday as bouts of heavy rain slackened the progress of the survey.

In Kunnathunadu taluk, 15 cents, valued about Rs.1 lakh, was recovered in seven separate cases in the Vengola village limits.

In Paravur taluk, five notices were issued to encroachers in Varappuzha village whereas in Kochi taluk the focus was on cases in which parties involved had raised disputes. In Kanayannur taluk, heavy rain prevented any survey work along the Chilavannur backwater on Monday. So far 17 notices have been issued and the survey in this stretch is likely to be completed in a couple of days, a senior taluk official said. Thereafter survey along the Thevara backwater beginning from the Venduruthy bridge area would be taken up immediately, he said.
