Plea for fact-finding team from Centre Karaikal neglected for long, say KSG members
KARAIKAL: Members of the Karaikal Struggle Group (KSG) along with local people on Tuesday observed a fast here demanding that the Centre send a fact-finding team to review the decision of the Union Government taken in 1962 keeping Karaikal region under the administrative set up of the Union Territory of Puducherry. S.Munusamy Kurumbakaram, councillor of Nedungadu Commune Panchayat and convener of Karaikal Panchayathraj Struggle Group, presided over the fast. The KSG was formed recently seeking separate union territory status for Karaikal region. R. Ramasrinivasan, one of the founder members of the KSG, said that Karaikal region which had a separate administrative set up under the French Rule was merged with India along with other French settlements Puducherry, Mahe and Yenam under a treaty on May 28, 1956 between Indian and French governments. ‘Objective defeated’
Subsequently, former French settlements were brought under one administrative set-up of Puducherry union territory. He said that the objective for which Karaikal region was brought under Puducherry union territory was defeated. S.P. Selvashanmugam, lawyer and convener of KSG and one of its founder members, said that Karaikal region was getting raw deal for the past five decades from the hands of Puducherry Government and the region was not getting its due share in power as well as funds He pointed out that the Karaikal region had been neglected in all aspects. Even though Karaikal district has six MLAs in the 30-member Puducherry Assembly, no representation was given in the Ministry, while Mahe and Yenam regions got representation in the Ministry. Freedom fighter O. Thirunavukarsu, Tirunallar Commune KSG Convenor G.K Nrayanasamy, Pavalar A.Pakkirisamy and others participated in the fast.
