GUWAHATI: The first wave of floods in Assam has affected about 1.45 lakh people in 192 villages across five districts. The floodwaters of the Brahmaputra, the Barak and their tributaries have also destroyed the standing crop in 2,655 hectares. In Karimganj district, the floodwaters overtopped a dyke and entered Karimganj town. All therivers are flowing above the danger level due to incessant rain for the last few days. Eighty-four villages, with a total population of 42,386,have been affected. A Border Security Force team is engaged in rescue operations, official sources said. In Cachar district, floodwaters have entered Silchar town and a breach of one dyke at Roypur has been reported. The waterlevel of all riversare rising, while the administration has opened three relief camps to shelter the displaced people. In Hailakandi district, the Katakhal was flowing two metres above the danger level and breaches have occurred at some places due to erosion and leakage. The flood situation in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji is also critical with floodwaters of the Brahmaputra threatening an embankment at Matmora in Lakhimpur district and that of the Gai, another embankment at Nilok in Dhemaji district. Water Resources Minister Bharat Narah told The Hindu that the water level started receding on Tuesday night.
