Fernandes meets Kalam

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Janata Dal (United) leaders George Fernandes and Digvijay Singh, and Dinesh Trivedi of the Trinamool Congress met President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam here on Tuesday and expressed their apprehension about the growing tension in Nandigram.

They sought his intervention in preventing a repeat of the March violence there. The leaders, who met the President minutes after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had called on Mr. Kalam asserted that they did not raise the issue of the Presidential election with him.

Mr. Fernandes, speaking to media persons after submitting a letter to this effect to Mr. Kalam, said that he had received an SOS message from Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee urging him to meet the President.
