Mamata supports Kalam

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress, a constituent of the National Democratic Alliance, on Tuesday announced its support for incumbent Abdul Kalam for the President’s post. The NDA on Monday decided to support Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

“I am appealing to all parties to consider Mr. Kalam as a candidate,” Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee said here.

“It was I who first proposed Mr. Kalam’s name last time when the NDA was in power, and at a meeting of the NDA a month ago, I urged that he be considered as a candidate this time too,” she said. “Let him be the consensus candidate for the post…He fulfils all the qualifications and is acceptable to all — from the grassroots to the highest levels.”
