Monsoon fishing Bill introduced

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma introduced the Kerala Monsoon Fishery (Pelagic) Protection Bill, 2007, in the Legislative Assembly on Monday, for allowing traditional fishermen to conduct fishing in the coastal waters of the State during the trawling ban period in the monsoon.

The Assembly referred the Bill to its Subject Committee. The Bill will return to the Assembly on Wednesday after vetting by the Subject Committee for being discussed and passed.

In a press release issued later, Mr. Sarma noted that Kerala was the first State in the country to ban trawling boats in its coastal waters during the monsoon period.
