Development works hinder traffic flow

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Traffic movement along several arterial roads in the city has slowed down considerably on account of development works undertaken by different agencies. Traffic police reckon that traffic in between 15 and 20 stretches is held up at any given point of time due to one construction activity or the other.

The work in progress to build a grade separator at Kathipara is a case in point where traffic through what is a key gateway for the city has suffered for months now. With the four-lane width no longer available, vehicles are compressed into three lanes leading to frequent pile-ups, a traffic police officer at Kathipara junction said.

“Until the projects at Kathipara and Padi became functional, traffic problems will remain,” a senior police officer said.

The Kathipara project has already overshot the April deadline announced by Union Minister T.R. Baalu.

With rainy days ahead, the construction work is expected to slow down further, an officer admitted.
