Anirban rules the roost

BANGALORE: Anirban Lahiri, winner of the LG Eagleton Amateur golf tournament last week, took his game a notch higher at the Bangalore Golf Club here on Tuesday. The change in course conditions did not matter one bit as he returned a card of six under 64 on the opening round of the South India Amateur tournament, the second leg of the LG All-India Amateur tour.

Abhishek Jha, with a four under, had the second best card of the day. There were four other sub par cards from the field of 83 golfers who teed off here on Tuesday.

Lahiri hit the fairways 15 on out of the 18 holes and found the greens with ease from there. He notched up easy birdies on eight holes, starting off with straight forward birdies on the first two holes. The birdie on the fifth was a 15-foot putt. But he also had a couple of dropped shots, three-putting on the par-3 third and 16th hole. “It was one of my best rounds of golf. I played my A game,” said Lahiri.

Jha slotted birdies on the second, the fifth and the 17th and notched up an eagle on the eighth, sinking a 12-foot putt to gain two strokes. He had only one blemish making a bogey on the 13th.

Junior player Amanjyot Singh, Saurabh Bahuguna and Rudresh Sharma played to two under each while former BGC amateur champion Simarjeet Singh had a card of one under 69.
