Air-India proves too strong for Kerala

Sports Reporter

Deluge of goals on the second day

Tuesday saw 77 goals being scored
Air-India did not have to strain much for its win

BATTLE FOR POSSESSION: Air-India’s Ashish Minz (left) gets past Kerala’s Jobish.

CHENNAI: For the second successive day, it turned out to be a deluge of goals.

The St. Joseph’s-TNHA junior National men’s hockey championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Tuesday saw 77 goals being scored to the 80 converted on the opening day.

The host topped the list on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu’s 24-0 drubbing of Gujarat signified the upper-hand the stronger outfits continue to enjoy. With two big-margin wins from Pool ‘A’, Tamil Nadu is in a comfortable position, but it has a difficult match against Bihar.

Easy win

Air-India showed its might with an 11-0 victory over Kerala. Innocent Kullu opened the account for Air-India quite early with a perfectly executed penalty corner.

Air-India pressed hard and a fine pass from the centre Vinod Kumar saw Mayank James picking the ball on the run and scooping it past the goalkeeper. Air-India, which led 5-0 at half-time, marched ahead with a single point agenda of scoring and with a Kerala defence readily willing, the Mumbai team did not have to strain much.

The results: Pool ‘C’: Mizoram 5 (Lalringhetha 4 (hat-trick), Lal Rinnuga) bt Madhya Pradesh 0; Haryana 4 (Vinod Kumar, Rohit Singh, Sandeep Kumar, Ved Prakash) bt Hyderabad 1 (Santhosh Kumar).

Vivek, Peter Alan Rajes h, Heartlin Hames 7, Shyam Kumar 3, Laxman Karan 7 (hat-trick), Saravana Kumar) bt Gujarat 0.
