Rich haul for India

BANGKOK: India collected a rich haul of three gold, four silver and five bronze medals as jumper Renjith Maheshwary produced a spectacular performance by beating Asian Games champion Li Yanxi of China at the Asian Grand Prix athletics championship here on Tuesday.

Maheshwary leapt to a distance of 16.68 meters in his second attempt in the men’s triple jump event to put India on a high. With his leap Maheshwary bettered both the Doha Asian Games gold and silver medallists in the opening Grand Prix of the season.

Kazakhstan’s Roman Valiyev, who won silver in Doha, had to settle for silver again with a jump of 16.45m. Yanxi finished a poor sixth with 16.11.

Second gold

Middle distance runner Sinimol Paulose brought in the second gold for India by winning the women’s 1500m race. Sinimol clocked 4 minutes 12.61 seconds to win the race ahead of Svetlana Lukasheva of Kazakhstan in a 1-3 finish for India. Sushma won the bronze with a time of 4:25.51. Sunil Kumar won the men’s 3000m gold in a 1-2 finish for India. Sunil timed his run in 8 minutes 0.76 seconds ahead of his teammate Surendra Singh (8:00.86).

Throwers Vikas Gowda and Saurabh Vij and the middle distance runner Hamza Chatoli were the other silver medal winners.
