DHAKA: The outgoing U.S. Ambassador, Patricia A Butenis, whose short tenure in Bangladesh witnessed some major developments, has said that Washington does not want to see any sort of military involvement in politics. The career diplomat, who was in Pakistan before taking up her new assignment in Bangladesh, was also against formation of any political party “under any pressure”. Ms. Butenis was also categorical on Washington’s view vis a vis Bangladesh, which is now passing through a crucial phase under a military-backed government as the caretaker authority pledged to hold election by 2008. “I don’t want to see anybody coerced or forced to join a new party, and certainly we do not want to see military involvement in politics… I have made this point before that military should not take any sort of political role,” said the envoy.
