BHOPAL: The water level of the Omkareshwar reservoir in Madhya Pradesh reached 189 metres on Monday with the Supreme Court setting aside an earlier interim order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court restraining the Government from raising the level until the project-affected families were completely rehabilitated as per the Rehabilitation and Resettlement Plan of 1993. A Narmada Valley Development Authority spokesman confirmed that the level reached the 189-metre mark in the reservoir by 11.30 p.m. “Everything is safe and there has been no loss of life or livestock,” he said. No village had been cut off and connectivity was secure. It was now possible to generate electricity from Omkareshwar. On Tuesday, the High Court took up for hearing a petition seeking the rehabilitation and resettlement of the dam oustees and fixed June 22 as the next date for hearing. The villagers of Gunjari in Khandwa district continued their protest against the rise in the dam’s water level. While they claimed that they belonged to the place, authorities here maintained that their dwellings in the village were built after the statutory notification under Section 4.
