New course at Institute of Home Economics

Parul Sharma

NEW DELHI: Delhi University’s Institute of Home Economics will introduce a new course in Biochemistry from the upcoming new academic session. The Institute has now become the fifth college in the University to offer B.Sc. (Honours) Biochemistry.

“After trying for the past three years, the college has finally been given permission to start this course from the new academic year. The seat intake for the course is 20 with some of them being reserved for candidates from Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes categories,” informed Head of the Biochemistry Department at the Institute Geeta Trilok Kumar.

“Biochemistry is becoming very popular among students these days. It has a lot of scope, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. There will be lot of opportunities for students of the course such as genetic engineering, molecular biochemistry and research and development in pharmaceutical companies,” she said.

Since the college already has a Department of Biochemistry, arranging faculty members to teach the new course will not be a problem. “We already have three teachers and will be hiring another five soon,” said Ms. Kumar.

Only students who have scored 60 per cent aggregate marks and above in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology or Biotechnology in Class XII can apply for B.Sc. (Hons.) Biochemistry and the first cut-off percentage for this course is likely to be high.

Other courses offered by the Institute are: B.Sc. (General) Home Science, B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Science, B.Sc. (Hons.) Microbiology and Bachelor of Elementary Education.
