LUCKNOW: Chief Minister Mayawati has created a Special Director-General of Police post for supervision of law and order and crime control in the State. Vikram Singh, who has been appointed to the post, assumed charge on Tuesday. The new post threatens to undermine the position of DGP G.L. Sharma, who till now was looking after law and order and crime control. Work allocation
Home Secretary Javeed Ahmed said here that work allocation would be completed in a few days. Mr. Ahmed said the Special DGP had been placed in the Rs. 24,050-Rs 26,000 pay-scale, given to all officers of the DGP rank. He said the headquarters of the Special DGP would be in Lucknow. Mr. Singh’s appointment runs parallel to that of Shashank Shekhar Singh as Cabinet Secretary, who, by virtue of the post, is a few notches above Chief Secretary. While the Special DGP is an IPS officer of the 1974 batch, Mr. Sharma belongs to the 1972 batch. Before returning to Uttar Pradesh, reportedly at the behest of the Chief Minister, Mr. Singh was Additional Director-General, Central Industrial Security Force in New Delhi. Considered close to Ms. Mayawati, Mr. Singh served as the ADG, Law and Order/Crime Control, when she was Chief Minister in 2002-2003. Before going on Central deputation he was ADG, Border Police. He was also Inspector-General, Special Task Force and IG, Varanasi Zone.
