Temple tank to be filled with fresh water
K. Subramanian
Better days ahead: The Vaidyanathaswamy Temple tank in Vaitheeswarankovil.
NAGAPATTINAM: The holy tank, ‘Siddhamirtha Theertham’ on the Lord Vaidyanathaswamy Temple premises at Vaitheeswarankovil near Mayiladuturai, will soon be filled with fresh water.
Water was pumped out of the 12-foot-deep tank a fortnight ago and silt removed, after a gap of nearly a decade. The pumped out water was used effectively for irrigating the nearby coconut grove of the temple. Shanmugha Desika Gnanasambanda Paramacharya Swamigal, the 26th Gurumaha Sannidhanam of Dharmapuram Adheenam, took special efforts and ordered the draining of water and remove the silt following complaints that the water was getting contaminated owing to immersion of salt and jaggery by devotees.
Thirunavukkarasu Thambiran, representing the Adheenam, is looking after the temple affairs. Fresh water will be pumped into the one-acre tank in a week or so.
Still, it is felt that no effort is being taken to remove encroachments blocking both the inlet and outlet of the tank, which used to get water from the Cauvery once.
