POLL PREPARATION: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, APCC president K. Keshava Rao and AICC general secretary for Andhra Pradesh affairs Digvijay Singh arrive at Kompally on the concluding day of the Congress training camp near Hyderabad on Tues day.
HYDERABAD: AICC general secretary and in-charge of State affairs, Digvijay Singh, cautioned Congress leaders here against losing their credibility as it might lead to an anti-incumbency feeling that would be difficult to surmount. Suggesting a three-point formula for retaining power in the general elections in 2009, he told a party gathering at the valedictory of a three-day State level training programme for Congress workers on Tuesday that leaders should not neglect workers. “Retain credibility, respect party workers and publicise achievements,” he said. Advising Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to personally monitor the progress of developmental schemes without relying on the statistics furnished by bureaucrats, he said the trainees here must also do likewise at the district level. The Congress Government had implemented pro-poor and pro-farmer policies that were commendable unlike the erstwhile Telugu Desam Government which worked for the welfare of the rich and industrial and business houses. Mr. Digvijay Singh asked the mandal level trainees to go back and constitute 5-member core teams at the booth level and empower them with the knowledge they had gained at the camp. This trained force should give proper publicity to the Government programmes and also act as watchdogs against corruption and tardy implementation of welfare measures. Lacunae in administration must be brought to the notice of the party leaders and Ministers and, as a last resort, agitations could be waged against the sluggish administration. He congratulated the Chief Minister for initiating several pro-people measures.
