Bio-tools to kill mosquitoes

The chikungunya scare has no doubt put the local bodies on extra alert. And the Koyilandy Municipality is setting an example in tackling the mosquito menace through novel, little-heard-of bio-control methods. Its sanitation drive places emphasis on environment-friendly means to eradicate mosquitoes instead of the usual chemical ones such as fogging and spraying of insecticides.

K. Dasan, chairperson of the municipality, says simple methods using locally available materials are being tried out with community participation.

Destroying mosquito larvae through a method of trapping them in a cowdung-arecanut husk solution, flushing of drains with salt water and using a net to cover septic tank pipes are some of the measures taken up. In fogging operations too non chemical solutions will be used.

A health squad has been formed to monitor the entire operation so that the means of eradication will not be counter productive.
