BHUBANESWAR: In addition to its resource and documentation centre on Orissan culture, Orissa Samskruti Academy, a newly founded city-based cultural institution, has launched lending library service recently. Academy director and scholar Kedar Mishra informed that in association with the Orissa Modern Art Gallery, the institution has launched its lending library service of books, journals and CDs on arts and culture. "Against a modest library service charge of Re. 1 per day, we offer our readers an access to a wide variety of rare publications on visual and performing arts, literature, heritage and world cinema. Such exclusive publications have gone out of the reach of the common man for its high price. Moreover, most of these journals are not available for sale in Orissa. This prompted us to build up an exclusive library of books, journals and CDs on culture," explained Mishra. The library remains opens daily for two hours during evening on all days except on Mondays when most of the cultural institutions like the state museum remain closed. "As it is not a commercial project, we manage with the voluntary service of writers, scholars, artistes and journalists who attend to the readers on rotational basis," Mishra said. Students of Utkal University of Culture, Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya and the two colleges of art and crafts are showing keen interest in it, he added. "Orissa has a rich cultural tradition but it is poor in documenting it. It would be our effort to collect relevant materials on various facets of Orissa’s cultural scenario and with help from some critics and artistes we have started with Odissi dace and Oriya cinema,” the director revealed. A directory of Odissi dancers, gurus, institutions and allied individuals is being compiled by the academy that will be ready by next year. Entries for the directories can be posted to the Academy’s office at the Orissa Modern Art Gallery Building, 132, Forest Park, Bhubaneswar.
