Fogging has become a familiar word to the public. With reports of dengue and chikungunya outbreaks taking up a lot of news space, fogging is very much in the limelight. Even though public health experts have clarified time and again during all-party meetings that fogging can only be a temporary measure to ward off mosquitoes and that permanent measures such as proper garbage disposal, unclogging of drains and systematic source reduction alone can reduce the mosquito population, representatives of political parties are more interested in purchasing fogging machines. At a recent meeting called at the Collectorate to coordinate fever control activities, one of the main demands of a politician was that at least a thousand fogging machines be purchased! A fogging machine costs nearly Rs.60,000. It will not cost even a fraction of this to keep one’s surroundings clean. C. MAYA
