City residents are now complying with periodic guidelines issued by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) zealously. It is not exactly owing to the desire to conserve energy. The real reason is the climbing electricity tariffs. Recently, the KSEB issued a directive asking consumers to switch off their refrigerators between 6.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. daily so as to save on their power bills. KSEB’s real intention is to help the State tide over peak-hour load problems. < /p> But home-makers oblige as they know that refrigerators consume lot of power. Each house can save at least 10 per cent of power by switching off the refrigerator during peak hours. Consumers need not worry that switching off the refrigerator will spoil the eatables in it. Bacterial activity starts in a refrigerator only if it is denied power supply for seven hours at a stretch, experts say. BIJU GOVIND
