Against tobacco: Students at the anti-tobacco campaign organised by Christ Nagar Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Lectures, debates and a visit to Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) by students marked the anti-tobacco campaign organised by Christ Nagar Higher Secondary School, Kowdiar, on Tuesday. A group of students from Class XII visited the RCC to get an overview of the issue. The information they picked up was shared with the rest of the students at school. A lecture on ‘Smoke-free environment and cancer awareness’ by Dr. Jayakrishnan of the RCC was held at the school as a part of the campaign. Students from Class XI and XII took part in a debate on the topic ‘Should tobacco be completely banned?’ Tomy Antony of Class XII was adjudged best speaker. The World Health Organisation describes tobacco as ‘The greatest man-made epidemic.’ Studies show that on an average, one person dies in the world every eight seconds owing to tobacco-related diseases. Considering the magnitude of the problem, a month-long anti-tobacco campaign aimed at setting the State free of tobacco is currently on.
