KOCHI: Lakshadweep Administrator B.V. Selvaraj flagged-off a tug of the Lakshadweep administration at a function held at Wellingdon Island on Monday. The 10-tonne tug was constructed by Vipul Shipyard, Surat, at a cost of Rs.4.91 crore. Mr. Selvaraj said the planning Commission had approved in principle a Rs.28- crore project for the construction of a dedicated berth in Kochi for vessels from Lakshadweep. The Cochin Port Trust has identified a 300-metre water front area and the proposal was under the consideration of the Ministry of Shipping. The Lakshadweep Administration has already taken delivery of two inter-island high-speed vessels constructed by NGV Tech Shipyard, Malaysia, and a 10-tonne tug constructed by Vipul Shipyard. A passenger-cum-cargo ship with a capacity of 700 passengers and 160 metric tonnes of cargo is under construction at Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam. It is likely to be delivered by August 2007. The flagging-off function was attended by Cochin Port Trust Chairman N. Ramachandran, Vipul Shipyard Chief Executive Mohan Rao, Transport Secretary A.K. Wasnik, and Lakshadweep Port Director A. Hamza and Directors of the Board of Lakshadweep Development Corporation K.G. Moosa, K.P. Muthukoya and A.M. Kasmikoya.
