White water rafting course begins

LIVING DANGEROUSLY: Trainees of white water rafting in the Karyankode river at Cherupuzha on Monday.

It gives the same experience that one gets while trekking. In addition to a spirit of adventure, you should also have a willingness to get wet in a turbulent river that flows along a rugged terrain.

All the 10 youth who are participating in the training in white water rafting in the Karyankode river at Cherupuzha under the aegis of the Adventure Academy are there both to enjoy the sport of steering the raft on a tortuous route downstream and to l earn the lessons of rescue operations in a river. The training programme started by the Adventure Academy on Monday in association with Xtreme Rafting is a new experience for the trainees as well as the local people.

The white water rafting training, the latest adventure programme to be organised by the Kerala Youth Welfare Board’s Adventure Academy, was inaugurated by District Collector Ishita Roy, who joined the rafting team for up to two km.

All the 10 trainees are equipped with life jackets, helmets and oars. Rijuraj Singh of the National Rafting Foundation, New Delhi, is training them on both the techniques of steering the raft travelling on wild river and also those of engaging in rescue works in rivers.

The white water rafting is a sport that requires skills to steer the raft downstream on a fast flowing river flowing over pebbles and rocks, says A.T. Sebastian, Special Officer, Adventure Academy. It is also easy to put the raft in a turbulent river for rescue operation, he adds.

The water adventure programme is the latest of a series of programmes being organised by the Adventure Academy here. The academy has been training local youth in adventure programmes, including microlite flying and paragliding on the Muzhappilangad Beach.
