BANGALORE: The Congress on Tuesday alleged that there were disparities in sanctioning of new government schools and colleges to various taluks in the state. It stated that the Youth Congress activists would soon launch a protest if the Government failed to rectify the disparities. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president M. Mallikarjun Kharge told presspersons that the Janata Dal (S)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition government had given preference to constituencies represented by its own leaders while sanctioning the new schools instead of sanctioning them to the needy areas. He accused the Government of ignoring all norms related to selection of areas for the allotment of educational institutions. Of the 280 new high schools that had been sanctioned recently, the backward division of Gulbarga had got only 34 schools while the divisions of Mysore, Bangalore and Belgaum had been given 64, 42 and 50 schools respectively. Such disparities had occurred in the allotment of 104 degree colleges and 90 pre-university colleges, he alleged. He said preference should have been given to taluks, which had been identified as backward by Dr. D.M. Nanjundappa Committee that looked into regional imbalances.
