Hyderabad: A Hyderabadi youth Fayaq, 24, was reportedly arrested by the Dubai police on criminal charges. While his father Abdul Aziz of Golconda filed a ‘habeas corpus’ petition in High Court two days ago, a regional language newspaper’s report linking him to Mecca Masjid blast triggered speculation of police stumbling upon important clues in the sensational case. However, City Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh told The Hindu that the police were not aware of anything about Fayaq except the newspaper report. “We are yet to receive any official communication from Dubai about the arrest ,” he said. Four days ago, the City Police claimed to have arrested an alleged agent of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence, Abdul Sattar, of Hyderabad. Interestingly, they announced in a press release that Sattar underwent terrorist training in Pakistan under the leadership of Shahed alias Bilal, a prime suspect in Mecca Masjid blast case and one Fayaq. Police officials declined to confirm whether it was Fayaq who trained Sattar and the youth arrested by Dubai police are one and the same. A graduate, Fayaq joined MBA programme in a private college at Narayanaguda but discontinued studies. Along with five other city youths, his name figured in a case of conspiracy to murder two Bharatiya Janata Party leaders of Saidabad area a year ago. While some of them surrendered before court in that case, he was absconding. A non-bailable warrant issued by a local court was pending against him in another case. His name also reportedly figured in the suicide bomber’s attack on Commissioner’s Task Force office at Begumpet. But Abdul Aziz claimed that his son was innocent and since the latter’s name was cropping up in some regional language newspapers now and then in connection with the Mecca masjid blast case. According to him, Fayaq left for Dubai in February, 2006, in search of work. “He used to speak to us over phone every 10 days and talked to us in the end of May last time,” he told The Hindu. Mr. Aziz said that one Harshad, an employee of Fayaq’s sponsor’s office, told him that Dubai police had arrested his son.
