Farmers observe fast

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Sugarcane farmers observed a fast here on Tuesday urging the State Government to implement their nine-point charter of demands. The fast was inaugurated by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary, N. Varadarajan.

The participants, led by the state general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, K. Balakrishnan, wanted crushing of all the registered sugarcane in the State. They said the Government must reimburse the losses incurred by farmers due to the delayed crushing of their produce. As promised by the Agriculture Minister, the unregistered sugarcane too should be accepted for crushing by the mills, they said.
