Crackdown on moneylenders
Bangalore: The Government has issued an order giving assistant commissioners, tahsildars and revenue officers the powers to crack down on moneylenders who are harassing farmers and driving them to suicide.
This has been done in the light of the fact that several cases of farmers’ suicides reported from throughout the State are a result of them borrowing from moneylenders at high interest rates and the subsequent harassment for non-payment.
According a press release from the Department of Cooperation, money-lending cannot be done without a licence. Anyone lending money without a licence or harassing people for non-payment is liable to punishment of up to six months’ imprisonment.
