Thiruvananthapuram: The International Centre for Kerala Studies has come out with the eighth book in the ‘Kerala Heritage Series’ titled ‘Geomophology of Kerala’. The book penned by V. Prasannakumar, head of the department of Geology, University of Kerala, is the first book on a science topic in this series initiated to bring out 100 books on specific areas relating to Kerala; its history, geography, language, culture, society, performing arts, folk arts and science. The book priced at Rs.120 has been divided into seven chapters. The first, ‘Land of Unity in Diversity’ gives a short take on the diverse physiographic features of the State. The second chapter is all about different types of landscapes and landforms. Among other things the book also explains the reasons for the formation of the landforms seen in the State. The book then moves on to discuss the formation of rocks during different geological ages. The distribution of mineral resources are also discussed in this chapter. In the fourth chapter, the author deals with the water resources of the State and gives a detailed account of the water bodies found on the surface and beneath. All these details are supported by pictures, tables and charts. In the chapter ‘Geomorphic Analysis’, the book speaks of the evolution of the landforms in Kerala; how landforms are the results of functions of structures, processes and time. This chapter also deals with topographic maps and map scales, contour lines, indexing and numbering, tools and techniques of geomorphic analysis including remote sensing, photogrammetry and Geographic Information System (GIS). This chapter also sports a Landsat image and a digital evaluation model of the Attappadi area, among other such images. The penultimate chapter deals with various soil types of Kerala. This chapter too is supported by pictures. In the last chapter Dr. Prasannakumar lists various kinds of natural hazards including earthquakes, tsunamis and landslides. The book was released on Monday by Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala M.K. Ramachandran Nair.
