Panel formed to hold talks with mill unions

Special Correspondent

To submit report to Government before October 31

Chennai: The State Government on Tuesday decided to form a committee under the chairmanship of the Handlooms Commissioner to hold discussions with trade unions and submit a detailed report on issues such as workload and wage revision for workers in the cooperative spinning mills.

The decision was taken at a consultative meeting held with leaders of seven major trade unions. The committee would submit its report to the Government before October 31.

An official release here said that out of a total of 18 cooperative spinning mills in the State, only five —Bharathi Cooperative Spinning Mill in Ettayapuram, Kanyakumari District Cooperative Spinning Mill, Anna Cooperative Spinning Mill in Andipatti, Dharmapuri District Cooperative Spinning Mill and Pudukottai District Cooperative Spinning Mill — were functioning now.

The wage accord for the workers of the cooperative mills expired in 1998. As an agreement for a new wage accord could not be reached with the trade unions, the State Government referred the issue to a special industrial tribunal in 2001, the release said, adding that interim relief was disbursed to the workers by the mills, the release said.

Recurring agitations by the workers to highlight their demands including the one related to wage revision had affected production in the mills, it said. Against this backdrop, talks were held with the trade unions in the presence of Minister for Handlooms N.K.K.P.Raja and officials concerned to find an amicable solution to the issue to ensure that the cooperative spinning mills did not fall sick, it added.

Leaders of trade unions including Labour Progressive Federation, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Indian National Trade Union Congress, All India Trade Union Congress, Anna Thozhirchanga Peravai and Marumalarchi Labour Federation participated in the meeting, the release said.
