Hindalco: unions ready for talks

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Trade unions at the smelter division of Hindalco’s Alupuram unit have agreed to open discussions with the company management. This came after a proposal by the management to set up a new extrusion press in place of the smelter division that was declared unviable on account of the high cost of electricity.

The consent was given at a general body meeting of the trade unions held at the Aluminium Factory Workers’ Union office here last week. K.N. Gopinath, general convener, and B. Chandrashekharan of INTUC were present at the general body meeting.

A trade union spokesperson said that talks between the company management and trade union leaders were likely to take place after June 20 in the presence of Additional Labour Commissioner K.V. Mohandas who was posted as the conciliatory officer by the Government.

The unions and the management were asked to reach an understanding on the new proposals by the end of July.

Meet on power

Meanwhile, the Standing Council of Trade Unions, Ernakulam, held a workshop on the impact of new electricity tariff on industrial Kerala.

High tension and extra-high tension consumers, and representatives of trade unions participated in the workshop organised at the Productivity Council Hall, Kalamassery, on Saturday.

It was decided that grassroots-level protest would be organised against the proposed move to hike electricity tariff. The council decided to hold a calling attention meet on “New electricity tariff a setback to industries in Kerala.”

The meet will be held at Ernakulam Town Hall on July 6. Trade unions under the aegis of the council planned protests against the recommendations of the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission and the proposal by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to hike power charges.
