KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode District Committee of the Kerala Higher Secondary Teachers Union (KHSTU) has appealed to the authorities concerned not to make schools centres of political activity. The KHSTU wanted the Government to desist from the move of making schools a venue for settling political scores in the backdrop of vesting the responsibility of school management in the Local Self-Government institutions(LSGIs). A meeting of the KHSTU district committee warned that the intervention of grama panchayat functionaries in school management could have grave repercussions on the academic fabric of the schools concerned. The meeting alleged that despite the academic year being declared as ‘efficiency year’, the book distribution process in schools has not been completed. Also, though the SSLC results were published well in advance, the commencement of the Plus One classes has been unduly delayed. The ground reality was such that a total of 20,000 students who have passed the SSLC in the district would not be in a position to secure admission to the higher secondary class, the KHSTU said. The teacher union through a resolution wanted the Government to initiate measures for providing new batches and schools to tide over the crisis in keeping with the higher education requirements of students. It also appealed against the practice of transfer of teachers by flouting seniority norms.
