KOCHI: There is no passenger backlog for travel to the Lakshadweep islands from Kochi, the Lakshadweep Administration has claimed. In a press release, the administration said that the last two voyages of both Tippu Sultan and Bharat Seema, which ferry passengers between Kochi and the islands, had been under-booked and hence had run service with fewer passengers. is showed, it claimed, there was no backlog of passengers. Reports in some newspapers that several island residents had been stranded in the city because of shortage of accommodation on the ships were incorrect. The administration also said that four cargo barges regularly ferried perishable and other cargo. The administration had placed an order for a 700-passenger ship with the Hindustan Shipyard, Visakhapat- nam, in 2000. The delivery was initially scheduled for February 2003, but the shipyard was yet to keep its promise. The revised delivery schedule had been set for August next and once the vessel is commissioned, the travel conditions would improve.
