Full complement for kharif after six years in Guntur

GUNTUR: Guntur district will have full complement during the current Kharif season after a gap of six years with rain God blessing the district with 55.5 mm of rain during June against a normal of 86 mm.

“This is the first season since 2001-02 that the district will have crops in maximum possible 6.17 lakh hectares during ensuing Kharif season against 5.69 lakh hectares last season,” Joint Director Agriculture P. Ajith Kumar told The Hindu on Monday. While cotton would be sown in additional 30,000 hectares compared to last year’s 1.30 lakh hectares, chillies and Red Gram, among the major crops, would go up marginally from 54,000 to 60,000 hectares and 27,000 to 30,000 hectares, he added.

While rains had been satisfactory during the current month, water from Prakasam Barrage would be released to Krishna Western Delta on July 1 or could be a bit advanced to help give momentum to nursery activity that was likely to begin on June 25. Preparations were, however, apace for preparing nurseries during the rains, he added.

Sowings for Rainfed and Irrigated Dry (ID) crops (Red Gram, Green Gram and Cotton) was likely to be completed by July 15 compared to last year’s August-end and water released in the Nagarjuna Sagar Canals from July 20. Sale of green manure had also picked up a lot with 2,700 quintals given out so far and another 1,200 quintals was likely to be the demand this year. The High Court meanwhile, has given permission to Mayhyco, Krishidhan and Ajith Seeds for sale of BT-II cotton seeds, which were supposed to be better in pest resistance and the department has stopped confiscating BT-II cottonseed. It had so far seized 4,500 packs.
