BERHAMPUR: Students of Berhampur University, colleges of the city and its suburbs gathered at the office of the Deputy Inspector- General (DIG) of Police on Tuesday, seeking the arrest of those behind the attack on student leader Santosh Das. They submitted a memorandum at the office of the DIG as the official was on a visit to Patrapur. The Ganjam district unit of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the South Orissa Students’ Association extended their support to the students. In the memorandum, they alleged that those who had attacked students’ welfare club president Santosh and another student Ghanashyam Behera on June 11 had links with the ruling party in the State. The attackers were involved in illicit liquor trading on the campus, they charged. The students sought the arrest of those behind the attack on at the earliest to restore normality on the campus. They also wanted the campus to be free of “non-students” who, according to them, were the main cause of law and order problems on the campus. Apart from it, the students also sought regular police patrol on the campus and strict action against persons involved in illicit liquor trade at remote areas on the campus. Students of Berhampur University, Gopalpur College, Lingaraj Law College and Binayak Acharya College took part in the demonstration. Santosh, former president of the welfare club of the university, Rabi Bisoi and leaders of the students’ union of the colleges led the protest.
